6.2 Stochastic Process

6.2.1 Concept of Stochastic Process

Stochastic process extends from the concept of stochastic variable. There are lots of examples of stochastic process in nature. For example, longtime observation of one point on the wing and recording the results automatically are necessary when the vibration of the wing of a plane in flight is studied. As a result, a deterministic function of acceleration-time, ü1(t) can be acquired. This deterministic function of acceleration-time cannot be known without experiments. However, the deterministic function ü2(t) acquired from another experiment conducted independently on the same condition will be different from ü1(t). In fact, because of the randomness of structural vibration, the same function of acceleration-time can never be acquired from two experiments although the conditions remain unchanged. These functions are integrated as a family of functions, as is shown in Figure 6.2. Consequently, the observation of structural vibration can be considered as a stochastic experiment, which is conducted during a period of time and leads to a result of a function of time t.
